The department collected over $4.9 million in court ordered fees and fines in fiscal year ’04, representing a 4.7% increase from FY ’03. Collections for felony court costs showed an decrease of 10% and misdemeanor court costs collected decreased by 4% from the previous year. Felony fines collected decreased by 3% and misdemeanor fines collected increased by 14%. Supervision fees showed a 9% increase the previous year. Pre-trial program and supervision fees decreased 29% from the previous year. Supervision, pre-trial, urinalysis and program fees are assessed by the Courts to reduce the cost of community supervision to the taxpayer and to insure an offender pays for at least a portion of the cost of supervision. Fines and deferment fees are paid to the Williamson County General fund to offset the county's expenses and restitution is paid to the victims to help offset any losses caused by the crimes. Court appointed attorney fees are collected and returned to Williamson County, in the total amount originally paid to the offender's court ordered appointed attorney. Restitution fees collected and returned to victims in FY '04 totalled $568,727.
