The department strongly promotes continuing education for all
staff. Community Supervision Officers are required by TDCJ-CJAD
standards to obtain 40 hours per year of training. Staff attend
35 hours yearly in monthly staff meetings that provide updates
on departmental issues. Staff meetings also include guest
speakers such as resource providers and training on relevant
topics.
In addition to staff meetings, staff development training was
provided on a frequent basis. Approximately 70 hours of Staff
Development training is provided to each officer each year. Some
topics of interest offered during the year included; training on
working with angry and difficult people, the sexually violent
offender, adult law and HIV training, the changing Texas law,
cultural awareness and sensitivity, defensive tactics, and
training on gangs.
Additional training provided by outside trainers continues to be
made available to department staff. Training in more than 80
different areas was attended in fiscal year ’00. Community
supervision officers logged more than 2,857 training hours in
fiscal year ’00. CTTC staff received 535 hours of training.
Support staff attend monthly staff meetings, staff development
training and special training offered outside the department
designed to assist them in performing their jobs more
effectively. Support staff logged an additional 531 hours of
training. |
